The Next Generation

As I'm trying to come to grips with being a member of the "middle ages", I find myself more and more in groups with persons older than I on committees and various organizations. Being a participant to more of their conversations, I listen as some comment on the state of the younger generation and how horrible they are and how our(country, nation, workforce, health care) will be ill well in the future. In my case, I have the great opportunity to teach ninth and tenth grade girls at our church. I often refer to them as "my girls", even though I probably shouldn't take sole proprietorship in their great character.

Each Sunday they amaze me with their initiative and depth of commitment to both their church and to their God. This past year, my small group of 10 ish girls have shared the gospel with over twenty fellow students, a huge task for young teen girls whose main developmental crisis at this point in their life is identity vs. role confusion.. I know middle agers including myself that would be more concerned about their identity when sharing the gospel. So I shouldn't be surprised that once again they showed the level of their maturity yesterday.

I gave them the opportunity to have ten minutes a week of class. I explained that they could use their individual talents and creativity to present whatever they wanted to the class. It could be a testimony of God's work in their life, a song, a skit, a game, as long as it had some tie to scripture or spirituality.

One of the girls immediately made a sign up list and with one pass around the room, the slots were filled until June. I couldn't believe it. Now, tell me which Adult Sunday School class would have such initiative. You know we would be making up excuses, well, I"m busy or I don't have any talents, or just stare at you blankly in shock that we would ask them to take responsibility for their own spiritual learning. SOOO... all this to say, I have lots of hope for the future. I'm proud of "my girls" and I have a lot more to learn from them.

Have a great Monday!!

What a great idea! I'm sure those girls will be so creative. They are an amazing group! Give them all my love and make sure you fill me in on what they come up with. So thankful that you continue to be a great teacher for them.
