My grandmother Elsie passed away of breast cancer, shortly before I was born. I never met my grandmother in person. The stories from my dad, aunts & uncle as well as cousins and friends creates a vivid picture in my mind though. I often feel like I knew her myself.
She was a very conservative woman, both in her values, beliefs, and resources. The family tells me stories of how she would gently unwrap gifts, carefully saving every last bit of gift wrap, then later would delicately cut them into squares to use as decorative stationary. She also often saved leftovers from meal times to put in stews and soups. Her generation along with her innate personality created a very resourceful lady.
In the 70's, Grandma Elsie was referred to as "tight", "frugal", and even loosely "cheap". Isn't it ironic, though, now all of those activities are referred to now as "green" activities. The family laughed at Grandma Elsie, then, but had she been a few decades later, she could have wrote books about her resourcefulness.
