Too Much To Handle

I know it seems like I keep posting about this, but I just want you to be aware of the child abuse epidemic in Oklahoma. If deaths were occuring this frequently due to some rare disease or illness, we would be demanding answers. Why do we continue to remain mute? Take a step in stopping child abuse. Email your congress men and women TODAY! Let them know another baby died at the hands of an adult. Just because it probably won't happen to your child - don't let these innocent babies and children go unprotected.

Mom and Boyfriend Charged in Child's Death

Oklahoma County prosecutors have filed a first-degree murder count against a man for the July 19 death of his girlfriend's 2-year-old daughter.

Herman Marzelo Vail Bailon was charged Thursday for allegedly beating Liliana Rodriguez at a local motel last month. Authorities have alleged that the 32-year-old Bailon admitted beating Liliana when she refused to eat her lunch.

Elizabeth Nicole Guerrero was charged Thursday with permitting child abuse and could face a murder count as well, prosecutors said.

She allegedly told Oklahoma City police that she knew Bailon had been violent with Lilana and her siblings and was frustrated about having to take care of the children while Guerrero was at work.

(Just posted this, but wanted to change my method...)

I was just going to comment on abuse in Oklahoma. We adopted a child through OKDHS and recently I contacted them to find out how to begin the process again. I asked about availability, and the representative told me there are more children THAN EVER in custody right now. Why is it becoming such an epedemic, I wonder?

Many thoughts, Amanda. First, kudos to you for adopting from OKDHS. I am so happy to see many more families willing to raise children of bad circumstance as their very own.

I would hope to say on a positive note, that maybe child welfare is being held more accountable and are seeing the need for more children to be in protective custody. Too many children were dying at the hands of their very own parents, often who had ongoing DHS investigations but not thorough assessment of their situations.

Based on mere statistical information, children are more likely to be abused when in poverty, surrounded by drug use, or cared for by untreated mentally ill parents. All three of these factors are on the rise in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and nationwide.

Abuse is often a generational cycle. Stopping or slowing abuse will only occur over the course of dramatic community intervention and education to break the cycles of generational paradigms.

However, when more of us stand up for those who are defenseless and hold our government, our society, and ourselves accountable, we then are going to see change.

Thanks Amanda for what you are doing to improve the lives of children! God bless you!
